We recently welcomed Theo to the 3Link team as our new IT apprentice at our Canterbury office. He's a tech-savvy enthusiast who loves all things technology, from gaming PCs to Cloud computing. We sat down with Theo to chat about his first month on the job, his hopes for the future, and his advice for other students who are interested in a career in IT.
It’s been really interesting, I’ve learnt a lot. At first, it was very confusing, but it all came together piece by piece, and confirmed that this was something I would really love to carry on with.
I’ve always been a gamer. As a kid, I found that gaming consoles weren’t all the hype any more and instead stumbled across PCs. Unfortunately, they were very pricey so if I wanted to get one it had to be on a budget. I discovered that my cheapest option was to build one myself and that’s where my research and love for IT began. As I have a passion for IT, some self-study knowledge, and analytical skills, I felt that this IT Technician apprenticeship would be a perfect career choice.
I don’t think there’s anything in particular. I’m just really looking to expanding my knowledge beyond the gaming pc area, including PC hardware and troubleshooting.
Something that surprised me in my first few days was the extent and capabilities of servers and the Cloud. It was really interesting to learn about virtual servers and how the Cloud can be so useful for accessing pretty much anything remotely!
I’m very excited to learn how networking and the virtual world works in depth, along with discovering how tech will evolve moving forward. I have a passion for IT so I’m eager to learn more and extend my knowledge.
I enjoy building and selling gaming computers. I’ve always enjoyed playing around with different PC parts, giving myself a budget, and trying to get the best possible price for performance. I also enjoy outdoor activities, mountain biking, surfing, and airsoft. In fact, I Iive just down the road from office in Canterbury, so may cycle to work, weather permitting!
If you enjoy IT, have problem-solving skills and like to be faced with a mix of different tasks and challenges every day, an apprenticeship like this could be a perfect opportunity to start an exciting career.
